Science Misconception In The Mouse And The Moon Made Of Cheese Essays Examples
1) Mouse and the Moon made of Cheese is a children’s book written by Russel Dean in 2013. It is about a mouse that has a strong belief that the moon is made of cheese. This belief was supported by his parents and other relatives that made him to pursue a journey carrying with him a fork to eat the tasty moon made of cheese. The book is themed ones perseverance in achieving something. It has a good intention however; literally, it is not good to inculcate in the minds of innocent children that the moon is made out of cheese. It is a science misconception.
2) Man has already landed in the moon thus, making it a moot point to use the curiosity of the content of a moon for a children’s book. For smart kids, they will not find it interesting. Also, Vergano (2014) wrote an article entitled “Lunar Rocks are First Direct Evidence of Collision that Formed Moon” published by the National Geographic website that mentioned that lunar rocks that were gathered by the Apollo missions were tested recently. The test finds out chemical evidence that the moon was once a planet but was blasted through a collision 4.5 billion years ago. The chemical characteristics of the lunar rocks reflect that the moon was once similar to planet mars. It did not tell anything about any blend of cheese.
Canup (2012) moreover in his article entitled “Forming a Moon with an Earth-like Composition via a Giant Impact” said that the moon as formed through debris from earth detached through a giant impact. The moon then has similar composition with that of the earth thus, not a cheese. Meanwhile, Hand (2010) in his article published in Nature theorise that the rocks brought home by the Apollo missions indicates that there is water in the moon. These are only some of the scientific findings that will make children disregards the idea of having a cheese in the moon.
3) Young students who are usually gullible will believe the story especially if the more senior people tells them. Even though the children’s story is only symbolic of people’s perseverance on something they want to achieve, it will be hard on children to erase the visual in their minds that indeed, the moon is made of cheese. It is also because children are more receptive of visuals.
Objective: To teach the children the story of the Mouse and the Moon Made of Cheese in a scientifically correct manner in order to avoid misleading knowledge among the children.
Activities: Before reading the story with the children, I will ask them to draw what they think the moon looks like. After that, visually explain to the children that the astronauts through the Apollo missions have already landed to the moon and brought home rocks. The first knowledge that will be on their mind is that the moon is not made of cheese. Towards reading the story, I would ask who among them wants to go to the moon. Then if they raise their hands, I will continue on telling them that every dream can come true like the dream of a mouse who thought that the moon was made of cheese and that he did everything to achieve that dream of his. I will wrap up the lesson telling them that the moon is not made of cheese. The cheese only represents the dream and that it doesn’t matter if the mouse was disappointed or not of finding out that the moon is not made of cheese. The most important is the lesson of perseverance in order to achieve something.
