General education or liberal arts, from the word itself, general, meaning belonging to common nature, used to relate to major parts rather than the details and is applicable to every class, kind or group, and a characteristic of the majority. It is a type of education system wherein college students take classes of different courses or subjects which are not included in their major.
There have been a lot of debates as to evaluate its importance to a college curriculum, saying that it consumes the time that the students can devote in mastering essential details of their major. But in reality, that is not the aim of general education. General education aims to develop students’ ability to answer different modes of inquiry across various disciplines such as humanities, arts, physical sciences, and social sciences. By enrolling to subjects outside their course, students can have a general knowledge about other discipline. If a student majors in electrical engineering, having a general knowledge about literature will not hurt, who would know probably his next boss who can be a literature fan is someone he’ll have an accidental chat or discussion about a novel.
General education also aims for the students to develop an understanding of the connection of different aspects by integrating the knowledge they got from their general subjects and apply it in solving and understanding important issues in work and in life. Take the first student example, the electrical engineering student, during his college days; he was required to take basic chemical subjects and in the future what if his next co-worker for a project is a chemist who is concerned with the material used in the production of the wire insulator. Having knowledge on a certain field widens a student’s perspective making them more flexible in adapting in a conversation or situation.
If students will be equipped with general knowledge, once they take the path of their field, they will see the importance of the existence of other things outside their major. There can also be an appreciation of the connection of the other disciplines to their job which can lead into seeing things in a holistic way, which is more important rather than detailed-focus look that only sees urgent matter.
